Mortal Kombat (2021) Movie Review | 2 Left Thumbs

Anyone who has followed me for an extended period will know what a massive fan I am of the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie! I made this whole dedicated video essay (https://youtu.be/Ycd6IfJUNbg) explaining why it is STILL the best video game adaptation ever made.
I'll say now. That title still stands. While my excitement for the 2021 reboot was through the roof, and there was a lot to like, this movie still failed to live up to what came before.

Mortal Kombat 2021 NAILS the costumes! The casting is fairly solid throughout. I enjoyed the overall plot, but how it actually plays out it a HUGE misstep. Cole Young was a waste of a character. The fatalities and character adaptations were dope, but the actual fights are honestly pretty weak...

I could still *totally* get on board with a sequel! But a lot would need to change for this to have any long term viability as a franchise. Probably they should have started with the Sub-Zero/Scorpion prequel. Or they should at least fast-track that now to win back a bit of good will.
