Nirvana - Interview 04/18/90
April 18, 1990 - Bertucci's Restaurant, Cambridge, MA, US
''The interview was conducted by Bob Gulla, who was a Nirvana fan since Love Buzz/Big Cheese came out. He wrote for a fanzine in Boston called “Boston Rock”. He was happy to have gotten the chance to interview the Band, although it was an assignment for the fanzine. The first piece of writing he had published was actually his review for Bleach in the same fanzine “Boston Rock”. The equipment used was an analog tape recorder. Here’s a direct quote regarding his thoughts on the band and the interview:
“We had dinner together in Central Square in Cambridge at a Bertucci's restaurant. Kurt had a calzone and said it was the best thing he'd ever eaten. He had never had one before. So I rolled the tape while we were eating, so the interview was maybe about an hour total. They were in great spirits. We talked mainly about the new material. The surprising thing was that Kurt's attitude about the new album was such that he thought he'd lose his entire audience. Thought it was too commercial. Kurt did much of the talking. He seemed relaxed, and a little tired. He talked a lot about having no money. (I paid for dinner.) Chris also talked quite a bit, mainly about his family's heritage and how difficult it was to be on the road, Chad didn't talk much at all, but was not disengaged.”
Here’s another direct quote, I asked about the tape to see if perhaps he had a full copy of it or if he’d ever thought about releasing it.
“The tape was stolen from me after the CDNow interview. They put it up and never returned it to me. I made some money off of the interview after Kurt's death, and I felt a little guilty. I only did it because I was struggling as a writer and needed cash. I believe the full interview is out there somewhere. I know it's been transcribed. But I haven't found all of the audio in one place.”
I made sure Bob got a copy, he was elated.'' - JL
