সিয়েরা লিওনে গৃহযুদ্ধে বাংলাদেশসহ ১৩টি দেশ সিয়েরা লিওনে শান্তি প্রতিষ্ঠার দায়িত্ব নেয়। বিদ্রোহীদের দখলকৃত অঞ্চলগুলোকে মুক্ত করতে বাংলাদেশের সেনা সদস্যদের কার্যক্রম ছিল অনবদ্য। বাংলাদেশ সেনাদল তাদের নিয়মিত সামরিক কর্মকাণ্ডের পাশাপাশি স্বাভাবিক জীবনযাত্রা ফিরিয়ে আনার জন্য বিদ্যমান বিভিন্ন জাতির মধ্যে আস্থা ও নিরাপত্তাবোধ গড়ে তোলার চেষ্টা করে। সাধারণ মানুষ বাংলা ভাষাকে গ্রহণ করে খুব আগ্রহের সঙ্গে। ভাষার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তারা বাঙালী সংস্কৃতির পরিচিত হতে থাকে। বাংলাদেশি সেনাদল যা করেছেন, তার জন্য সিয়েরা লিওনের সরকার কৃতজ্ঞ। তৎকালীন প্রেসিডেন্ট আহমাদ তেজান কাব্বাহ কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাতে একটুও দেরি করেন নি। বাংলা ভাষাকে সে দেশের দ্বিতীয় ভাষা হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি প্রদান করেন।
