My name is Thea and I am twenty-four years old. This is the story of how I landed myself in the awkward situation of getting stuck in an elevator with my crush and his girlfriend and then suffered the consequences later.
It was a normal day, well, if you consider getting late for class normal, that is. I reached my campus building and made a rush for the elevator. Just my luck, that the doors were about to close. But, somehow, I dashed for it and managed to wedge my foot between the closing doors.
In the process, I was almost about to fall from slipping on the marble floor. I waited for the impact of my face hitting the ground, but it never came. A hand grabbed mine in time and steadied me.
I looked up to see who it was and almost gasped. It was none other than my long time crush, Rhys. Rhys was a member of the college swim team and an ace at what he did. His looks were an added bonus. It was clear that all the girls in our college were madly in love with him.
I blushed and straightened up, entering the elevator. I couldn’t believe my luck. Getting the chance to be with my crush in an elevator? Heck yeah! It was like one of my wildest dreams was coming true.
“Are you okay?” Rhys asked me in concern.
I nodded, avoiding his gaze and clicked on the switch for the fifth floor. I glanced up to see that Rhys and I were not alone in the elevator. My heart fell to my stomach and my spirits deflated. There was another girl inside with us. I knew her. She was one of the most popular girls of our college. She was well reputed as an all rounder and had won various college level pageants. It was no secret that many boys had a crush on her.
From the way, she had her arms around Rhys, it was clear that they were in a relationship. It made sense. He was the most popular guy and she was the most popular girl. They were the perfect match. It still sent a pang through my heart because I didn’t know that Rhys was committed. I had always assumed that he was single. Not that I had any expectation of ever getting to even talk to him, but still, it’s never good to find out that your crush has a girlfriend.
I couldn’t wait to get out of the elevator now because it was becoming hard to watch all their PDA. Suddenly, just as I was thinking of jumping out as soon as the elevator would arrive at the fifth floor; it came to a halt. It was not the normal halt: it was more like a jerk and the lights inside the elevator went out.
Rhys’ girlfriend let out a dramatic yelp while I fished out my phone and switched on the flashlight. Rhys sent me a thankful look, while taking out his own phone and dialing a number.
He hung up after a few minutes and informed us in a grim tone that there was a technical difficulty and it would take about five to six hours for them to fix it. My jaw dropped to the floor.
What the heck? I hadn’t signed up for being stuck in an elevator with my crush and his girlfriend for five freaking hours!
And, what about my class? I was already late.
“All the classes have been suspended,” Rhys informed, “it’s a blackout for the whole area.”
“Well, looks like we are stuck here then,” Rhys’ girlfriend said, laying her head on his shoulder.
He seemed a bit irritated by this. As if noticing my eyes on him, he turned to me and cleared his throat.
“Which department are you from?” he asked in an attempt to break the ice.
“Journalism,” I replied. But, the glare that his girlfriend was giving me didn’t go unnoticed by my eyes.
I had to roll my eyes. He just asked me a simple question. Why was she overreacting?
She seemed even more annoyed by my attitude, but, Rhys was completely oblivious to this all and continued talking to me.
In no time, we were talking like long lost friends. He told me that his sister was interested in journalism too and asked me for some details about the course. I took this opportunity to express my appreciation for his swimming skills and how big of a fan I was.
He laughed it off humbly and thanked me. I couldn’t help falling more deeply for him, after talking to him and getting to know his nature. Before I knew it, we were exchanging numbers and stuff for further communication.
