Excel checkboxes get indeterminate state

Excel’s in-cell checkboxes have been updated, unleashing brand new possibilities!

We are now able to control multiple child checkboxes from a single parent, letting us select and deselect them all simultaneously.

Yes, this was possible before by including an IF formula for each child checkbox. However, there was one major drawback: it rendered them unclickable.

Now, if you select all the checkboxes and then toggle one or more off individually, the parent automatically switches to the new indeterminate state, which is depicted by a little horizontal line running through the centre. This signifies a mixed set of checkboxes. Only when there’s a clean sweep of blanks does the parent do the same.

Okay, I have a confession…

I told you a lie — none of this is true, and neither is the mocked-up video.

But we can all dream, right?
