Wood Turned Segmented Bowl with Inlaid Letters

Created May 6, 2016
By Kevin Hou '16

"I've created a lot of bowls during my last few years and since I am a graduating senior, I wanted to finish my high school career with a unique and rewarding project. Having letters inlaid in wood turned bowls was something I hadn't seen someone do before, so I decided to take on the challenge. Full Resolution Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/khou22/...

This video describes the entire process, from design to finished product, that went into building this walnut and poplar segmented bowl with the letters "KHou" inlaid in the side. I used the CNC machine to create the letters. I have never had any formal education in wood turning. The majority of my learning was done online watching other wood workers on YouTube.

It took about 60 hours to build, film, and edit. The footage was shot entirely on the iPhone 6S. All my editing was done in iMovie (I have had no formal training in film). The 3D renderings were all done in SketchUp and the CNC cut paths were generated in Aspire.

A huge thanks to all the shop teachers at Lick-Wilmerding High School who have made my experience at LWHS and in the woodshop so memorable. I want to especially thank tech arts teacher Youssou Fall for teaching and mentoring me these past four years.
