WAN Technologies: Ethernet as a WAN Technology
Originally, Ethernet was a standard to create LAN only. With improved technology, Ethernet was standardized by IEEE as a WAN technology.
1000Base-LX: Radius of about 5Km
1000Base-ZX: Radius of more than 70Kms.
Today, we can have Ethernet as a WAN service from service providers (SP). Customer gets connected with the Fiber Ethernet link using router interface. Fiber Ethernet link is connected with service provides’ location (PoP). Service provider Point of Presence (PoP).
Basic Ethernet WAN Service: Logically, it behaves as a point-to-point connection between routers.
Physically, it behaves as if a physical Fiber Ethernet connection exists between routers.
Different Names of Basic Ethernet Service:
Ethernet WAN : This term refers to WAN specific Ethernet as opposed to LAN Ethernet
Ethernet Line Service (E-line) : A term by Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) [The MEF is an industry alliance dealing with Ethernet network and services.]
Ethernet Emulation : This term implies that the link is an emulated link not a literal Ethernet link.
Ethernet Over MPLS (EoMPLS) : This terms refers to the technology used to create Ethernet services for customer.
EoMPLS uses the same Ethernet header and trailer as discussed in video on Ethernet. Data link layer creates a frame.
User on one network creates the fame with destination address of R1. R1 decapsulates and encapsulates the frame to forward it to R2 and which in turn forwards the frame to ultimate destination of user.
