Statues of Women in London | How Many and Who Do They Commemorate?
For International Women's Day I'm celebrating the 19 statues of women that I've come across London.
There are probably way more - do let me know who I've missed! But I've selected these ones because they're all public, free-standing and non-Royal, historical women.
In any case I hope you enjoy hearing a bit about their eventful, inspiring and sometimes heartbreaking lives.
Here's a map of all the statues I mention; https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1tG5HPgYuN0TpXV3CBx-DXnnlUkr6Xiuc&usp=sharing

- The number 925 for total UK Statues is from this article in 2016. https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/feminism/2016/03/i-sorted-uk-s-statues-gender-mere-27-cent-are-historical-non-royal-women
- In 2018 the BBC calculated there were 828 according to the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43884726
- NB - Sadly the PMSA has been disbanded and I couldn't find a full list available online, they were meant to be conducting a new survey in 2020 of statues and monuments so I don't know if there's another survey from a different body available.
