For the Giga Texas production line, the crucial parts have entered their tested phase. However, Gigafactory Texas is not producing any vehicles for now. For the Tesla Model Y's front and rear underbody, it will be the Giga press that will produce single-piece megacasts that are to be used in the made-in-Texas Tesla Model Y. The aerial footage of the Tesla Giga Texas, the future electric vehicle production site, has shown a lot of megacasts piling up over the last few days.
For the Model Y's front megacast, Giga Press trial runs are being conducted by Tesla as seen in the footage posted. Lauding both IDRA and Tesla, Turck acknowledged what the single-piece megacast is worth and recognized the effort that went into making it possible. He also pointed out the fact that the veteran automakers had better take notice of what Tesla has been up to with its megacast technology. The recent Texas Gigafactory flyover revealed about 150 of the front megacasts that Tesla has produced, a number remarkable in and of itself that bodes well for the eventual Tesla vehicle production. It goes without saying that Tesla will have to conduct a number of trial runs to ensure the quality of the components produces and some of trustworthy sources have already reported on the Tesla Model Y front megacast tests done at the site. Moreover, the company is supposedly also running a number of tests in order to ensure the quality of some of other parts of the upcoming Tesla Model Y. All-electric crossover’s rear underbody megacasts are also waiting for their turn to get made by the Giga Press. To facilitate manufacturing, Tesla has been working on producing bigger casting parts. The goal is to build bigger parts in one single price for the vehicle. The first results of it were seen in the Model Y's rear underbody. As the rear underbody of Tesla Model 3 has been made of seventy different metal parts, the company invested a lot of effort into making just two big parts. Tesla shared some pictures of the megacasts used in the Model Y production along with the images of all the welded parts used in Model 3. The company is planning to produce and use bigger parts in its vehicles. Tesla recently ordered many new machines including the giant casting machine, which is considered the biggest in the world for producing the front and rear underbody for its Model Y. Tesla already installed the first casting machine outside the Fremont factory. Tesla has taken a number of major steps in order to develop a new innovative chassis design by means of the enormous IDRA Giga Press working at its Texas Gigafactory. The company will be using a combination of the rear and front megacasts alongside with the new structural battery pack in order to form the underbody of the upcoming Tesla Model Y. Instead of utilizing numerous welding techniques, various metals, bolts and adhesives (that actually hold together hundreds and even thousands of individual elements of standard automotive chassis), Tesla is planning to rely on two single casts (for the rear and front underbody) produced by means of the IDRA Giga Press. The battery pack, one of the most crucial elements in any EV, will be directly connected to these parts. It will help reduce the weight of the vehicle and simplify its assembly process.
