✨ Castillo del Lago — aka the “Madonna House”

Perched above Hollywood since 1926, this Spanish Revival mansion was designed by architect John De Lario for oil tycoon Patrick Longdon. Over the decades, it has stood as both a glamorous landmark and a place steeped in shadows.

In the late 1930s, infamous gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel lived here while running an underground casino. Whispers of dark deeds — even murder — still cling to its walls.

After Siegel’s assassination in 1947, Castillo del Lago cycled through owners, sitting vacant in the 1950s before taking on new life. Yet the house never shook its eerie reputation.

Authors Laurie Jacobson and Marc Wanamaker described it in Hollywood Haunted (1994) as a hotbed of paranormal activity, where visitors often felt an oppressive sense of dread.

Fashion photographer Tom Murray reported his cameras mysteriously failing during a 1988 shoot: “All the Polaroids I shot in the house came out black. Different cameras, different film — always the same.”

Even Madonna, who owned the mansion in the ’90s, admitted she sometimes felt a dangerous “force” in the house. Her caretaker claimed doors locked themselves, and a disembodied voice would call his name when he was alone at night.
