Why I chose San Rafael over Guatapé, Colombia/ La Piedra del Peñol

Located just two hours from Medellin, Colombia, Guatape is a small, colorful town known for its scenic lake views and unique rock formation called "la Piedra del Peñol".

Although Guatapé, Colombia has picturesque views which can be seen from the top of La Piedra del Peñol, the ecolodges found just outside the small town of San Rafael offer a much more tranquil experience for South American travelers on a budget looking to avoid tourists and find that isolated experience in nature.

Even though I recommend San Rafael for your stay (Ritmo del Rio Ecolodge), Guatapé should not be missed for a day trip. Since Guatape is on the way to San Rafael, you won't need to detour whatsoever. You can easily get to Guatape from the terminal del norte bus station in Medellin. Once in Guatapé, I recommend climbing the giant rock (la Piedra del Peñol), taking a jet ski ride (roughly $30 for a half hour), walking the streets of the colorful town, enjoying some local coffee at a cafe, and finally renting a motorcycle from Guatape Motos.

My favorite part of the entire excursion is the motorcycle ride itself from Guatape to San Rafael. The views on the entire drive are absolutely breathtaking and the drive alone makes for an incredible experience. When you arrive at the Ritmo del Rio ecolodge you'll be ready for a refreshing dip in the river found on the private property. The ecolodge provides all of your meals, which are delicious, and offers beer, wine, and rum if you're looking to relax after a long day on the road. You can rent a private cabaña or stay in a shared dorm room. You're able to hear the river from your bed for a peaceful night's rest. Highly recommended!
