Cold formed steel, also known as light gauge steel or LGS, is deployed worldwide for structural framing, in buildings of all sizes and purposes. These include multi-story projects, meeting engineering compliance to local design and building codes and to last as long as any building erected using traditional materials.

There is a misconception by some that cold formed steel (CFS) should only be used for interior framing or non-structural building elements - but that’s not the full extent of its capabilities.
Far from it. CFS delivers many advantages in the construction of structural, load bearing walls as well.

Cold formed steel, also known as light gauge steel or LGS, is deployed worldwide for structural framing, in buildings of all sizes and purposes. These include multi-story projects, meeting engineering compliance to local design and building codes and to last as long as any building erected using traditional materials.

Because CFS, with the help of technical software, can be engineered and designed to be load-bearing, and because of its unique physical characteristics, CFS makes for a superior structural framing material.

Light gauge cold-formed steel is well established in several markets and expanding its footprint in a number of other application areas. The significant application areas include:

• steel for residential construction: steel-intensive traditional single dwelling housing is expanding, recognizing the inherent benefits steel can bring over more traditional forms of construction

• roofing and walling systems: comprising purlins, girts and profiled metal sheeting and used extensively on residential, industrial and commercial buildings

• cold-formed portal frames and sheds: comprising a range of sizes of single-level steel buildings for commercial, industrial, agricultural and domestic purposes. Cold-formed light gauge steel members with bolted or screwed connections are used for the primary structural framing, with roofing and walling membranes comprising purlins, girts and profiled metal sheeting

• street hardware: poles, fences and other street hardware increasingly utilize cold-formed steel

• racking systems: cold-formed light gauge steel beams and columns in highly optimized multi-level configurations form the basis for intensive storage of goods for applications ranging from small-scale workshops to purpose-built automated warehousing for large-scale distribution networks

• decking systems: pervasive in composite steel-concrete construction in multi-level building structures, structural decking systems can act either as permanent formwork or compositely as part of the structural action of the suspended concrete slab

• internal fit out: cold-formed light gauge steel framing is used extensively for internal partitioning and ceiling systems in commercial and industrial buildings

• mid-rise buildings: recent developments have seen mid-rise (up to 7–8 storeys) commercial and residential buildings with cold-formed light gauge steel used for the majority of primary structural framing

• modular construction: recent developments have seen a number of buildings constructed using volumetric modular systems. Cold-formed light gauge steel provides significant benefits, including strength, stiffness, lightness and dimensional stability.
