Clarinet Lesson: Ligatures- The best type for you
Michelle Anderson, founder of Clarinet Mentors (www.learnclarinetnow.com), presents a lesson on clarinet ligatures. How to use a ligature properly is described, and then an overview of some of the best types of ligatures is provided.
You can download a list of recommended ligatures at:
http://www.clarinetmentors.com/resources/LigatureRecommendations.pdf
A ligature is designed to hold the reed in place on your mouthpiece, and ideally to allow it to seal across the hole while allowing the reed to vibrate freely. A better quality ligature can give you a more free and resonate tone quality, and is definitely worth exploring.
Every person's clarinet setup, and desired tone quality, is different. There is no definitive "best ligature" for everyone. I highly recommend that if you have time to try a few different ligatures out, you pick the one that sounds best to you on your mouthpiece and clarinet.
Here are the ligatures that made my "top 5 list":
Silverstein Ligature (my favourite premium-priced ligature)
Vandoren Optimum Ligature
Peter Spriggs Floating Rail Ligature
Bonade Inverted Ligature (my favourite intermediate-priced ligature)
B G Tradition Gold Ligature
Since they work differently for everyone, here are some other excellent ones to try out:
Vandoren Leather Ligature
Other BG Ligatures
Rovner Clarinet Ligatures
Vandoren Klassik Ligature
There are likely other good ones out there as well. You should experiment to find the one that you like best.
