Jascha Heifetz with Eugene Ormandy (1934)

Upon his death, the American music critic Harold Schonberg whimsically dubbed Jascha Heifetz the "great stone face".
Historical witnesses said that in private Heifetz could be relaxed, even crack jokes, but never in public.
Heifetz once gave, for his students, an imitation of an almost-good Russian violinist of the old school playing the Wieniawski D minor Concerto. To those who knew the violin and the score, the results were excruciatingly funny. Notes were almost on pitch. Vibrato was exaggerated just a shade too much. Rhythms were just askew. The class was in convulsions. Heifetz never once smiled.
