Rich & DawnCheré Wilkerson — Love Lies: How to Handle Heartbreak
Heartbreak. A word that, when unpacked, reveals layers of emotions and behaviors that rob us of freedom and joy.
In the third week of their collection of talks "Love Lies," Pastors Rich and DawnCheré Wilkerson dive deeper into the topic of relationships with a sermon entitled "How to Handle Heartbreak."
How do we handle heartbreak? Do we avoid it, and pretend like it’s trivial? Do we tell ourselves we can get through it alone? Many times we turn to the wrong places to look for healing, falling prey to the pressures of pop culture and what is flaunted as being the right thing to do.
Life, through the disappointment of failed relationships, disappointments, failures and disapproval, will bind our hearts into brokenness. However, God gives us hope through his everlasting and steadfast love. His love binds our broken hearts in a different way. As Psalm 147:3 is written, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
After recognizing the hurt, we should look to God for our healing. This will take time. Just as physical fractures take time to mend, emotional and spiritual fractures also require healing time. Our heart - the essence of our lives - will be mended by God’s hand over time, if we perceive our brokenness according to His plan for us. In this process, our duty is to make the right choice and to think the right thoughts.
We must choose to resolve instead of resigning and decide to restore and not to relapse. We must be committed to restricting the affections of our hearts while continuing to contribute love and generosity to the community. We must recognize that once we place our trust in God, we are bound by a love that binds our broken hearts in the right way, in God’s way.
To do this, we must realize that we cannot achieve freedom from heartbreak through our own short-sighted efforts. Instead, we must have complete faith and trust in His design for our happiness in this life. That is the state of mind that we should relentlessly pursue.
