Chasing Down Nevada's Out-Of-The-Way Mines

With so many new mine exploring channels and a rapidly shrinking supply of mines, we’ve been focusing more of our time and energy on the out-of-the-way mines of Nevada and the Sierras in an effort to continue to deliver fresh and interesting content… There will be exceptions, of course, as some abandoned mines that have been heavily visited still have interesting elements to them. However, we have an aversion to crowds and so are increasingly finding ourselves out on the fringes of the abandoned mine exploring hotspots.

My international mine exploring has been a part of this as well as it has taken me to some abandoned mines that have never been visited by other mine explorers and many that may have been visited on occasion, but have never been documented. With the exception of the mine at Engilchek in Kyrgyzstan though (and that video was successful because of the oddity that I experienced there rather than the mine itself), the views on the international mines are never as good as those of the mines in the U.S. I find that curious as I would expect viewers to be intrigued by the new and the exotic. Oh well, I’m often surprised by the TVR Exploring videos that end up being the most popular and the least popular.

By the way, I don’t think I ever mentioned it, but that series of Engilchek videos very nearly didn’t happen because I almost had my cameras confiscated at one of the military checkpoints we passed through. I’m not a stranger to such situations and I handled it, but I had let my guard down and almost paid a high price for it. I learned very quickly during the time that I was working as a war reporter to immediately swap out memory cards whenever I had something good recorded as confiscation is a high risk in war zones. A tiny memory card is easy to hide, while a bulky camera is not.

Ha, this went way off of abandoned mines… In short, we’ve had some wild successes with our new policy of going off of the mine exploring beaten path and many deep disappointments. I’d say it averages out in the middle in this video. I hope you enjoy it.

Several kind viewers have asked about donating to help cover some of the many expenses associated with exploring these abandoned mines. Inspired by their generosity, I set up a Patreon account. So, if anyone would care to chip in, I’m under TVR Exploring on Patreon.

Thanks for watching!

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.

These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.
I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!
