2018 Trek FX - Is the cheapest Trek worth it?

The Trek FX for 2018 is about the lowest price you can pay for a bicycle from Trek that fits an adult. Does that make it the best entry level Trek? That depends on what you want to do with the bike.

The FX series is Trek's line of hybrid bikes aimed at the fitness market or the commuter / errand bike rider. There are 7 bikes in the FX series. The FX, FX1, FX2, FX3, FX4, FX5, and the FX 6. Of all the FX bikes the base FX is the only one with a quill stem and a 28lb bike weight. The other models in the FX line weigh less and come with better components, like a treadless headset and Blendr.

Does that mean the FX is inferior? Far from it. I've found it to be an excellent bike. I think it would be a great intro bike into Local Bike Shop bikes without paying the normally high prices. That said, it isn't for everyone. If you want a bike for trail riding you may want to look elsewhere. I had fun putting it on some very light non-paved paths, but I wouldn't want to do that regularly. The fork and wheel setup is geared towards streets and that's where this bike excels. You don't really notice that there is only a 3x7 drivetrain. It is fast, nimble, and fun. Everything Trek claims it to be. You also get quality setup and a good warranty, so if you're considering a bike for the streets and want something arguably better than a Big Box Bike - give the FX a look.

I purchased this bike on a Black Friday Sale for $289 with an additional $50 in-store credit. The list price is $359, but I think the bike is a good deal in the $300-$329 price range, so you may want to haggle or catch the bike at a sale.
