DESCRIPTION: Between 2016 and 2018, essayist and humor writer Elissa Bassist saw over 20 medical professionals for a variety of mysterious ailments. Elissa had what millions of American women had: pain that didn’t make sense to doctors, a body that didn’t make sense to science, and a psyche that didn’t make sense to mankind. Then an acupuncturist suggested some of her physical pain could be caged fury finding expression, and that treating her voice would treat the problem. It did.

In her new memoir Hysterical, Elissa shares how growing up, her family, boyfriends, school, work, and television all had the same expectation for a woman’s voice: less is more. She was called dramatic and insane for speaking her mind, accused of overreacting and playing the victim for having unexplained physical pain and was ignored or rebuked like women throughout history for using her voice “inappropriately” in expressing sadness or suffering or anger or joy. Because of this, she said “yes” when she meant “no,” she didn’t tweet #MeToo, and she never spoke without fear of being "too emotional." So, she felt rage, but like a “good woman” she repressed it.

Elissa Bassist and novelist and CIIS professor in Interdisciplinary Arts and Writing Carolyn Cooke explore how girls and women internalize and perpetuate directives about their voice, making it hard to emote or “just speak up” and “burn down the patriarchy.” Elissa shares her journey of a voice lost and found and discusses new ways to think about a woman’s voice—where it’s being squashed and where it needs amplification. And she encourages those who feel like their voices have been lost—especially girls and women—to unmute their voice, listen to it above all others, and use it again and again without regret.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES

We hope that our events provide opportunities for growth, and that our audiences will use them as a starting point for further introspection. Many of the topics discussed in our events have the potential to bring up feelings and emotional responses. If you or someone you know needs mental health care and support, here are some resources to find immediate help and future healing:

🌿 Visit 988lifeline.org or text, call, or chat with The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 988 from anywhere in the U.S. to be connected immediately with a trained counselor. Please note that 988 staff are required to take all action necessary to secure the safety of a caller and initiate emergency response with or without the caller’s consent if they are unwilling or unable to take action on their own behalf.

🌿 Visit thrivelifeline.org or text “THRIVE” to begin a conversation with a THRIVE Lifeline crisis responder 24/7/365, from anywhere: +1.313.662.8209. This confidential text line is available for individuals 18+ and is staffed by people in STEMM with marginalized identities.

🌿 Visit translifeline.org or call (877) 565-8860 in the U.S. or (877) 330-6366 in Canada to learn more and contact Trans Lifeline, who provides trans peer support divested from police.

🌿 Visit https://www.ciis.edu/ciis-in-the-world/counseling-clinics to learn more and schedule counseling sessions at one of our centers.
