Here we have an example of Sujita who got not 1, but 2 tuition fee waivers - $14000 from TAMU - & $50000 from UTD She had a 321 in her GRE, a 7.5 band score in IELTS and a GPA of 8. She’s pursuing her masters in management information systems. She had no internships or work experience, but had a couple of projects and some research work in her portfolio.

Overall, to apply for a tuition fee waiver, have strong academics, a good GRE score, and a high IELTS/TOEFL score as well. But, this does vary from profile to profile, depending on your research experience, work experience, or projects you’ve conducted.

If you’re a Research Assistant, you’re expected to assist the professor with their research work. You get an opportunity to write your own research proposals and work under a professor who has a similar field as yours. You’ll also conduct in-depth analysis, measure progress of the research, report findings and compile detailed research projects.

If you’re a teaching assistant, you’ll be helping out a professor with multi-dimensional activities such as grading assignments, teaching undergraduate courses, clearing student doubts, conducting exams, and so on.
To get an RA/TA, approach your professor and request for the same. The most probable time of receiving an assistantship is after the 1st semester of study. You can even request for it in your SOP, and get a chance to receive it before enrollment.

Protip: Research about the universities and the faculty to include it in your Statement of Purpose. This displays that you truly want to get into that university, and have a deep interest in it. Thus, your chances of getting an admit will also be higher.
