Baroque Ukulele Arr. - Españoleta - Gaspar Sanz, 1674 (on a rainy day)

It’s rained so much this year, it’s hard to work around it. But I think the rain actually suits itself to some baroque guitar music. I’m not a guitarist, but I’ve been fiddling with the uke a bit.

This is based on the arrangement from Rob MacKillop’s book. I altered some of his arrangement.

The instrument is a Pequeño model from Ohana Ukes. It is meant to invoke the late-19th century ukuleles of Manuel Nunes. It’s pretty tiny even for a ukulele. Really good instrument from Ohana. I reshaped the headstock to make it look more like a 19th century instrument and replaced the metal tuners with Charlie Herin’s Pegheads.

Sanz (1640-1710) was professor of music at the University of Salamanca and we’ll know for his guitar works. Obviously, he didn’t have a ukulele, but in some ways the baroque guitar was more similar to ukuleles than to modern “classical” guitars. The Hawaiian ukulele was developed from the Timple of the Canary Islands, which developed from the 4-course Renaissance guitar. One of things that makes ukuleles suited to arrangements of early guitar music is re-entrant tuning. This is a feature of early guitars and ukuleles where the “low” string is tuned an octave higher than one would except on a modern guitar.
