I offset my game's reticle… and people had OPINIONS!
When I posted about my game's offset reticle recently the response was WAY BIGGER than I expected. Clearly, this is something people have some very strong feelings about! So I wanted to do this quick followup to address two of the main comments.
Firstly yes, the offset is completely optional. You can tweak the offset to the exact amount to like, or just zero it out to place it back in the centre. My default approach to any UI feature that is strongly influenced by personal preference is always to make it optional.
Second, Memory's Reach is a puzzle and exploration focused game. It's not a shooter and there's no combat and no precision aiming involved. I can totally understand why you'd want a centred reticle for an FPS, I would too most of the time. But in my game I think the offset works really well - by default it's offset by about 5% of the screen height which is quiet subtle, but still enough to help keep the broader scene in view when performing actions.
There were a heap more comments on the last video too and I've been reading all of them. And while I'm still convinced the offset if the right choice for my game, the comments have raised a lot of great points and it's given me ideas for other ways I can tweak the interaction and improve the game.
A demo of Memory's Reach can be found on Steam, please check it out give me a wishlist :)
