Find the perimeter of the following shape. You have 15 seconds. Pause the video if you need more time.

Time's up!

Here we have an irregular shape so we have take this side by side.
We know the perimeter of a shape is the sum of all its sides.

First, let's add the sides that we can see starting with the sides 4, 5, and 6 which totals to 15.
Then we take all the vertical sides that all add up to 6.
The running total is now 21.

Now for the tricky part. We have 2 sides that are unknown in length.
The top side can be represented by 5 plus the gap length.
And bottom side can be represented by 4 minus the gap length.

Let the gap length be X. So now we have the top side as 5 plus X and bottom side as 4 minus X.

We go back to our running total of 21 and add the missing sides. The X cancels out, leaving 5 and 4 added to 21.

Therefore the perimeter of the shape is 30!
