Battles That Changed History: Waterloo
The 9th grade Excel class at Wylie E. Groves High School has an elective called Battles That Changed History. I use this class to teach students how to demonstrate argumentative writing. The final product in this class is a paper whereby students argue and defend their choice for greatest commander of all time. For five weeks we discuss battles and tactics while learning research skills. By the end of the course students are able to assess a mock battlefield and position troops to gain an advantage. The battles used must be simple enough to discuss in 15-20 minutes and must be from an area that students have some prior knowledge of. No matter what, I have fun and the students seem to humor me. Thanks for watching.
