I conducted several experiments (and PID control tuning) with simpler self-balancing robot structures (old Meccano parts) and a hand-made reaction wheel.

In this experiment, I used a casted iron wheel and got better results. The distance of the motor axis, gyroscope position relative to the ground was varied with taller and smaller structures. All of them seemed to work well. However, this self-balancing robot could not stand for a large external disturbance.
