Syracuse to Buffalo on the Erie Canal Trail-A Short Film By Bike Adventurer

After riding the "East Corridor" of the Erie Canal from my hometown, Syracuse, NY to Albany, NY and immensely enjoying it, this year, I rode the other half, running about 165 miles from Syracuse to the Buffalo suburb of Tonawanda, where the physical trail ends.

Going into the trip, I was expecting that this side of the trail would be very similar to the one I rode last year, but as it turns out, that could not have been farther from the truth; while large portions of the section between Syracuse to Albany were paved, this section had large portions that were still the characteristic "Stonedust" surface that the trail is known for, which, for someone like me, who loves gravel riding and bikepacking, meant this was a very fun three days. This half of the trail also had a more rustic feel, with lots of big, green steel girder bridges and barricades along the waterfront. This was also my first full-on bikepacking tour and as such, I spent as much time as possible off the pavement, occasionally using different trails and unpaved roads if they followed the direction of the trail, including some dirt roads through a forest in a park in Rochester. Other dirt trails that I briefly used that ran alongside a paved portion of the trail include the Crescent Trail near Fairport and the Genesee Valley trail in Rochester, which also led to the dirt roads in the park. The trail remained largely unpaved right up to Lockport, then continues on pavement up to the end of the trail in Tonawanda. It was so much fun exploring New York State on dirt and gravel; it is a side of our state that you don't see from a car.
