Lake Retba: Senegals Incredible Pink Lake #africa #pinklake

Lake Retba — also known as the Pink Lake — lies just outside Dakar, Senegal, and is famous for its vibrant, shifting color. Depending on the time of day and season, the lake can appear soft pink, bright rose, or even deep magenta.

Its unusual color comes from salt-loving bacteria that produce red pigment in sunlight. With a salinity higher than the Dead Sea, Lake Retba has been a traditional salt harvesting site for generations.

Locals protect their skin with shea butter and wade in to gather salt by hand — continuing a cultural legacy as stunning as the lake itself.
