Queer 70s: A Film Season Looks Back at the Decade After Stonewall
📽️ QUEER 70s at the Barbican
From 11 June to 16 July, this powerful season revisits queer cinema of the 1970s — a decade of raw honesty, wild risk, and radical imagination.
Here’s what’s screening:
🎞️ Barbara Hammer’s shorts (US)
A pioneering lesbian filmmaker, Hammer captures queer desire with joy and rebellion in Dyketactics, Superdyke, Women I Love, and Double Strength.
🇯🇵 Bye Bye Love by Isao Fujisawa
A genderfluid fugitive and a macho rebel hit the road in this anarchic, lost-and-found gem from Japan’s underground.
🇦🇺 The Set by Frank Brittain
A young man tumbles into Sydney’s elite art scene and bisexual heartbreak in this rare glimpse of 70s Australian queerness.
🇩🇪 Ticket of No Return by Ulrike Ottinger
Tabea Blumenschein floats through West Berlin in a surreal, glamorous odyssey of drinking, drifting, and queer connection.
🇺🇸 Car Wash by Michael Schultz
Amid funk and chaos, Antonio Fargas steals scenes as Lindy, a proud queer worker who won't be sidelined.
🇮🇳 Badnam Basti by Prem Kapoor
India’s first queer film centers a bisexual love triangle, blending silence, tension, and poetic restraint.
🇧🇪🇫🇷 Je Tu Il Elle by Chantal Akerman
Made at 24, Akerman’s portrait of longing and isolation ends with one of cinema’s most intimate queer love scenes.
🇪🇸 My Dearest Senorita by Jaime de Armiñán
An intersex character navigates transition and self-discovery in Franco’s Spain, against all odds.
🇳🇱 A Woman Like Eve by Nouchka van Brakel
A mother leaves her husband for a woman, risking everything in this moving Dutch feminist melodrama.
🇺🇸 Adam & Yves by Peter de Rome
A poetic gay porn film from a legend of queer erotica, set in dreamy 70s Paris.
🇬🇧 Sebastiane by Derek Jarman
A homoerotic Latin-language retelling of Saint Sebastian’s story. Fierce, sensual, unforgettable.
