Why is the forbidden city called by this name?
The forbidden city was the palace of the Chinese Emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
This World Heritage site was built in the early 15th century, and has been the political and ceremonial heart of the Chinese government for more than 500 years. More than 1 million people worked on the construction of the expansive Palace. It includes 90 palaces, and is recognised as one of the most important five palaces in the world.
The forbidden city also served as a fortress to protect the emperor and his family. Each corner of the palace has a tall guard tower. Ordinary people were forbidden to enter the city, and that is how it came to be called 'The Forbidden City'.
