Basics of Songwriting For Music Producers
Are you struggling with songwriting? Many music producers have never learned even the basics of songwriting, and went right into music production. The process of songwriting for music producers is the same as it is for anyone else, but I want to look at it through the lens of being a music producer. Whether you're writing beats to license, or a track for your solo music, this two step songwriting tips formula will help you out.
The problem with going right into music production before learning how to write songs, is that you get into the details of how to make 'stuff sound good'. This makes it possible for you to make something that sounds great on its own, so that even if you write a horrible song it still sounds pleasing to the ear! Don't get me wrong, sound design and advanced music production tips are incredibly important, but if the song you're starting with is crap it will always be crap. You can't polish a turd.
Moral of the story, if you're trying to write music with the most amazing sounds in the world and you don't pay attention to the actual chords, hooks, and beats in your song your songwriting will suffer. To counter this you're going to start with a chord progression with a stock instrument setting (no plugins), you're going to pattern it into a common song progression, you're going to focus on sections to write hooks over that chord progression, and then you're going to do this until the song sounds great! Before you add any plugins, or drums, or bass, you must have something that sounds good or great!
Then we'll proceed onto adding percussive elements. Don't use any fancy sample packs, just use whatever you have open. You want your song to sound good with only chords, melodies, and drums. Risers, pads, audio effects and more will just cloud your judgement about the quality of the songwriting. If you can get your song to sound great before adding these elements its going to sound incredible once you actually do sound design and music production!
