The dividend yield is one of the most important and most misunderstood ideas in dividend investing. You may think you know the definition but do you know how to calculate dividend yield and the strategies to get the highest return?

You know I’m a big believer in dividend investing. I created our 2019 Stock Market Challenge portfolio with dividend stocks and it’s up 20% so far this year, almost double the market return. Dividend stocks put cash in your pocket while you invest, period.

But one thing most investors don’t know about this type of investing is, what is the dividend yield and the details around it. You might know it’s calculated as the dividend payment divided by the price but what is a good dividend yield? Are high dividend yield stocks better or worse than others?

In this video, I’m digging into dividends explained and everything you need to know about the yield. I’ll start by revealing the average dividend yield and two ways to find a stock’s dividend yield. I’ll then show you why you can’t just invest in high dividend stocks and the risks in these cash investments.

I’ll show you all of this in an easy example using the Apple dividend yield to explain how dividends work and how to make sure you get the cash payment. I’ll then share the three best dividend investing strategies to get the highest return with the lowest risk.

These two groups offer some of the highest dividend yields in the market but there is one very difference with other stocks. You cannot value these stocks with things like the price-earnings ratio.
