Type VII U-boat brief - #20
READ THIS DESCRIPTION!
A briefing on the Type VII U-boat.
ERRATA:
1. When describing the operational areas of the Type VII U-boat I mentioned the Black Sea. That was a mistake I meant Baltic Sea. Little tough driving a Type VII down the autobahn ;)
2. Not errata per se, but I should have been more specific about torpedo capacity. The Type VIIA carried 11 torpedoes (4 bow tubes + 6 reloads, 1 external stern tube). Type VIIB onwards the stern tube was relocated internally (because of double rudder) so it could be reloaded once plus 2 externally carried reloads for a total of 14 torpedoes.
3. Not errata per se, I should have taken a little more time to talk about the Type VIIC/42. Planning for this boat began early in 1942 with preliminary design drawings being produced in June of 1942. It was planned for this boat to have modern conveniences like large capacity food refrigerators and freezers, air conditioning and de-humidification systems, as well as other mechanical and electrical improvements. While production of this boat was cancelled, theses features were carried over to the Type XXI. I bring this up because some people point to the fact that the Americans had these features in their later fleet boats (I know from the Gato class onward, not sure about the earlier fleet boats) and thus German subs were primitive and garbage.
