Genie the Alpaca does the Limbo

This cria was hand raised. I'm certain she knows the words "cria" (baby alpaca) and "Genie" (her name). They are vocal creatures, constantly "humming", as you will hear. Speaking high-pitched gibberish will get crias excited. So here I am, speaking gibberish to a cria who crossed a rope barrier meant to discourage her from entering an area where equipment was kept. She quickly shows me how she got in there, then proceeds to shove her eyeball into the camera lens.

Genie was a sickly young cria that I brought back with me from North Carolina, where her mother had died after giving birth to her. I had been taking in sick babies and nursing them back to health, so I accepted her. Genie proved to be a special girl. She has been an excellent introduction to alpacas for hundreds of children and veterinarians in training. To this day (as I write this in 2015) when I talk to her, she lifts her nose straight up and "licks the air," just as she would do when she was about to get her next bottle of milk as a baby. Taken April 18th, 2009.
