In the Shadow of Dictatorship: Creating the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art (3:50)

During an era when Spanish abstract artists found success abroad yet struggled for recognition at home, the artist and collector Fernando Zóbel (1924-84) established the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha. The museum opened to the public on July 1, 1966, and was the first institution in Spain dedicated exclusively to abstraction. Highlights from this remarkable collection—most coming to the United States for the first time—explore the rich panorama of abstract Spanish art under the Francoist regime.
