During an era when Spanish abstract artists found success abroad yet struggled for recognition at home, the artist and collector Fernando Zóbel (1924-84) established the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha. The museum opened to the public on July 1, 1966, and was the first institution in Spain dedicated exclusively to abstraction.
