Tenjin Shinyo-ryū was founded in the 1830s by Iso Mataemon Ryūkansai Minamoto no Masatari, a retainer of the Kishū clan born in Matsusaka. It comes from two main older schools, Yōshin Ryū and Shin-no-Shintō Ryū. Because unlike other older schools of Jūjutsu, it was not developed during the period of great military unrest, the Sengoku era, its techniques don’t take into account the heavy and cumbersome armor you were supposed to wear at the time. Consequently, the style is more flowing, there are some quick strikes aiming for vital points that were previously protected by armors on the battlefield, and also movements designed to knock the opponent off balance.
That school is particularly known as one of the styles practiced by Kanō Jigorō, the founder of the Kodōkan, and is considered a direct inspiration for modern Jūdō.
