Bydlo mouthpiece experiment

This is an experiment using a new mouthpiece I had Doug Elliott put together for me for my 4 valve Cerveny Bass Trombone. The intention behind this mouthpiece was to have a tuba sized rim, with a shallow bowl that would fit into a medium sized trombone or euphonium receiver. The Rim is the TU-130, cup is the TU-G and the shank is the medium size or european euphonium size G-6. On the Contra Bass Bone it worked out great so I decided to experiment with it and change the shank to the Doug Elliott R 5 H so it would fit into the F tuba. The R 5 H came from another Doug Elliott mpc that I had and although it was not designed to work with the TU-G bowl or middle section, I thought I would give it a shot on Byldo.

At first, the sound was very thin on the f tuba and the lower register did not sound good at all. I also found that using the above setup made the horn play sharp so I had to pull out about an inch to get it in tune. The main thing I did find was the the high G# was a little more focused.

I will be doing a video on how to practice Bydlo and will use this mouthpiece as well as my standard F tuba mouthpiece so you can hear the difference. Another thing that I did change after making this video was I shortened the length of the my 5th valve tuning slide about 5/8's of an inch on both sides so the high G# would slot nicer. This worked out great, to bad I did not do it before making this video as the G# on most F tubas are flat.
