What?

The word Feudalism comes from the word ‘feud’, which means ‘conditional ownership of land’.
Society was divided into rigid classes
Politically there was no central authority
Economy was based in villages, which were self-sufficient and produced little surplus for trade. Hence, it was marked by a decline in trade as well as towns.
Lack of a central political authority
Numerous Feudal Lords who controlled the affairs of the society.
The King was not very powerful
The peasants were exploited by the Feudal Lords
Church extended beyond religious affairs in Europe.

Why Feudalism developed?
lack of a single central political authority in Western Europe
Disintegration into many small and big kingdoms.
Local Lords became more powerful than the King and controlled the affairs of the society.

The Church

Pope has more power than the King
Monasteries were institutes of high learning.
Money for Church posts.
Money for every ritual.
“Letters of Indulgence”- Money for removing sins.
Pope, nuns, bishops etc. became corrupt & lived like princes.
Church owned huge property.
Wandering Monks authenticated any marriage and would remove all sins for money.
