Elvis Presley - Summer of 1956. Elvis in concert, on TV, at home, on vacation....... This is the next part of my potted history of Elvis incorporating the sites I've managed to visit in and around Memphis and the Deep South. This is put together from videos I recorded in 2017 and 2019 visits. This video concentrates on the summer of 1956 which was a highly eventful time in Elvis history. In June Elvis caused controversy with his allegedly suggestive performance on the Milton Berle Show before attending Overton Park in Memphis to catch a performance by his pals Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. Elvis then appeared on local TV station WHBQ to promote his Russwood Park benefit show the following month and took June Juanico with him to Houston to pick up a new Cadillac. July would see Elvis perform on the Steve Allen Show, appear on Hy Gardner Calling and record Hound Dog and Don't Be Cruel in RCA's New York recording studio. Following that he returned to Memphis by train and relaxed at his Audobon Drive home before the Russwood Park show on the evening of 4th July. After visiting a fan at St Joseph's hospital who was unable to attend the previous night's concert following a road traffic accident en route, Elvis went down to south Mississippi for a vacation with June Juanico and her family before heading for a tour of Florida and one date in New Orleans.

Sources of information have been gathered since I was 12 years old!! Some (but not all) sources include books by Peter Guralnick, Ernst Jorgensen, Pal Granlund, David English, Erik Lorentzen, Alan Hanson, Paul Richardson and Keith Flynn. Websites include elvisinfonet.com, elvis.com/au, historic-memphis.com, and the fascinating stories and information contributed by so many to the sites, and magazines 'Elvis The Man and His Music' and 'Essential Elvis'. Also the Memphis locations books 'Elvis - Memphis Style' by Mike Freeman and 'Follow Me To Memphis' by Andrew Hearn.
So many more over the years on TV documentaries (although many need better researchers), and VHS (!!), and DVD releases.

1956 23 April-6 May - Elvis is in Vegas for a 2 week engagement at the New Frontier Hotel.
It is during this engagement that Heartbreak Hotel reaches number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and his debut album 'Elvis Presley' hits number 1 on the albums chart.
1 June - Elvis is photographed at the Overton Park Shell in Memphis.
He was there to watch his friends Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash perform.
5 June - Elvis makes his 2nd appearance on the Milton Berle Show singing 'Hound Dog'
which he had seen being performed by Freddie Bell & The Bellboys in Las Vegas. The performance is criticised by all of the media outlets as being obscene.
12 June - After the TV show, Elvis completes a tour of California and Arizona
before returning to Memphis where he is reunited with June Juanico who he had met in Biloxi . On this day they both fly to Houston where Elvis is to pick up his new Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz.
After picking up his new Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz in Houston, on Saturday 16th of June
Elvis was here at WHBQ-TV studios on the Wink Martindale show to promote the Russwood park show on the 4th of July.
On Friday 22 June Elvis began a 7 date tour of Georgia and North and South Carolina which was the first tour that the full line-up of the Jordanaires toured with Elvis.
Following the date in Richmond Elvis and the crew, by train, go back to New York and then on July 1st of course is the Steve Allen show where Elvis is filmed singing Hound Dog to a basset hound in a tuxedo. And that was followed in the evening, later in the night, by the 'Hy Gardner Calling' show where Elvis answered questions on the telephone to Hy Gardner.
On the next day, 2nd of July, Elvis was in the studios in New York where he cut, where he recorded Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel and Anyway You Want Me
Somewhere across the way there was White Station and there's famous photos that Alfred Wertheimer took of Elvis arriving back in Memphis from New York on the 4th of July
Elvis jumped off of course and came back here. So there is quite a few photos on July 4th taken here at Audubon.
3 August - After driving down from Biloxi the day before, Elvis begins a tour of Florida in Miami.
During the tour Elvis will trade in his newly bought Lincoln Premiere for a Lincoln Continental Mark II
12 August - Elvis arrives in New Orleans for the last date of the tour the next night....
The Roosevelt Hotel.
He had a date in the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium and he stayed here for the night.
New Orleans Municipal Auditorium.
Elvis played here August 13th 1956 after Elvis had done a tour of Florida. This was the final date here and that was the last time he played New Orleans
And after he finished this gig, after a couple of days off, he was off to Hollywood to start filming 'Love Me Tender'.
