Replacing magnetic MRC front shocks on a 2005 Caddillac XLR

The XLR uses Magnetic Ride Control. Electronically adjustable, smooth, and tuned for the car. When they fail, they’re expensive. Dealers want around $800-1000 per shock.

Some people install C6 shocks because they’re cheap, simple, and don’t break electronically. The ride computer of the XLR needs to be modified or resistive adapters put onto the shock plugs.

You shouldn’t go this route as loose Magnetic Ride completely, the car rides harsher, and the valving isn’t matched to the XLR’s weight or geometry. It saves money, but it downgrades the car.

Look at Rock Auto or discount parts suppliers for the OEM shocks, and you can find the pair for around $1000.

Here’s how to install them.
