Making Tutù Cookies! | Sicilian Cocoa Cookies
Have you ever had tutù cookies before? This traditional Sicilian cookie is usually eaten around the Festa dei Morti period, but growing up in the United States, we always made them around Christmas. Whenever you make them, you will find a spicy, cocoa-based, bite-size cookie that is made with love.

Recipe:
There are many tutù recipes out there, varying slightly, but this is the one we always use at home! This recipe will make about six dozen cookies, depending on the size of the cookies, but you can easily cut the recipe in half!

Ingredients:
1.5 cup shortening
1.5 cup sugar
1.5 tsp. vanilla
6 eggs
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
5 cup flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
6 tbsp. cocoa (heaping)
½ tsp. cloves (optional)
½ cup raisins or nuts (optional)
Cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Add dry ingredients. Mix well. Add raisins/nuts. Roll into balls. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Let cool and then frost!

For the frosting:
1 tbsp. melted butter
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
1-2 TB milk.
Mix the ingredients together until they form frosting, adding ingredients as necessary to find the right consistency.
