Georgian parliament passes 'foreign influence' law despite mass protests | DW News
Georgia's parliament has approved a controversial law that has sparked weeks of mass protests. Police have confronted demonstrators outside parliament, where lawmakers also clashed before the vote.
Critics of the ruling Georgian Dream party fear the so-called 'foreign influence' bill will be used to stamp out dissent - and will dent Georgia's hopes of joining the European Union.
The legislation requires media and other groups to register as "pursuing the interests of a foreign power" if they get more than 20% of their funding from abroad. Opponents of the law say it closely resembles measures adopted by the Russian government to crackdown on dissent.
Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvili has vowed to veto the bill, but the government says it will use its majority to override her and ensure the measure becomes law.
