Canon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM 'DO' lens review with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)

Here's an odd lens that no-one ever seems to have actually bought - one of Canon's smaller, Diffractive Optics ('DO') lenses, this time, a 70-300mm. Is this lens's smaller size a real advantage - and can it deliver, optically?
