MPLS || Multi Protocol Label Switching Explained in Detail || CCNA & CCNP

It can create a End-to-End path that act like a circuit-switched connection; however, deliver layer 3 IP Packet.

Switching is Layer 2 protocol and Routing is Layer 3 protocol. MPLS makes the Routers in the netwrok to act like the switches in the local network. Hence it is also known as Layer 2.5 protocol.

Instead of using complex Network Address and Routing table, MPLS uses labels to forward packets
from one hop to next.

3 Major Operations of MPLS:

PUSH  Add Label to the packet, performed at the Ingress Router

SWAP  Replace the Label of the packet, performed by the LSR in between Ingress and Egress Router.

POP  Removing the label from the IP Packet, done at the Egress Router
