Sanctuary at Grand Memories November 2022
This resort is located on an island key north of mainland Cuba. Driving through Cuban towns, I appreciated that while I was in a territory of Cuba, I was not living the Cuban experience. The Cuban experience is very dire, this literally is a Sanctuary away from this.
I had to remember that I was travelling, and things are different. This is expected. I would be disappointed if things were the same as home. No rye, but plenty of rum. No french fries, but delicious fried cassava (rare to find in Canada). No Tim’s Iced Caps, but iced coffee and frozen lemonades were common but not daily. Morning coffee was delicious. Some mornings there were crepes in place of omelettes. This was fine. Evenings featured grilled chicken and pork, and seafood (shrimp) and sometimes fish. My advice is to enjoy the three beach grills for lunch. In order of distance from beach entry 1. grilled meat and fish, 2. Panini sandwiches and 3. Pizzas. Each has an adjacent bar.
In Canada autumn brings falling leaves and in Cuba washed in seaweed. This is nature. In spring, there has always been much less. The beach is a little exposed, and so each day there were waves I enjoyed crashing and bobbing in. Some days the catamarans weren’t sailing. Too rough.
Bring a travel mug. In fact, all things important to you and your enjoyment, bring them as well. I bring packets of hot sauce, lime and lemon crystals, soya sauce, canned tuna, peanut butter and cushy toilet paper. It just makes the experience better for me. Better to light a candle than to curse the dark. Oh yeah, bring a flashlight.
Stay aware and take care of each other. There were two incidents of assaults while we were there. Alcohol was involved in both cases. The bar staff were professional in assisting guests who were over served. My advice, try the liqueurs (Coco, Coffee, Cacao) on ice. Unfortunately, not available for sale at the airport.
Your butler assists in your check in upon arrival, books your a la cartes, and assists in your check out. Tipping is preferred in US or Canadian dollars. In the future, I will bring US $1s and CDN $5s.
If returning, I would plan an outing at the neighbouring shopping district for a meal and shopping. It is a pretty area for videos and photographs too. Short walk with a drink, or a trolley ride. The pool is tranquil in the morning and a fun party place in the afternoon.
The ride back to the airport cemented the value of the experience I had. Tearing the heaven out of hell is a practice that I am learning. I hope you enjoy the people and the peace at the Sanctuary as well.
Please comment. I would love to answer any questions.
