Prix St George, How to Keep the Cadence, FEI judge Cesar Torrente

Cesar Torrente judges the Prix St-Georges test as it’s ridden, and then works through the issues, starting with keeping the same cadence in the trot for the whole test. He encourages the rider to find more flow and rhythm, and as the horse becomes softer, the trot improves. They work the shoulder in and volte, relaxing the curb rein and keeping him light in front.

They add the half pass to this exercise, and Cesar offers great tips on improving the scores on this movement. To make the half pass better, he asks for more bend. In the medium and extended trot across the long diagonal, Mr. Torrente stresses the transitions in and out, and using the corners. At the canter they work on making the movements look easy, soft and flowing. Asking for a shoulder in in the corner before the half pass helps the quality, and the shoulder fore shoulder in prep also helps the canter pirouettes. He performs great threes, but has some mistakes in the fours, and Cesar recommends allowing him to flow forward more.
