Humanity evolved to live in a tribal social structure of around 50 - 100 people.

In modern society we are cut off from that wellspring of human connection and social abundance, a part of our human birthright.

No wonder we feel so 'small' and alienated in modern times.

We are not isolated individuals but the sum total of our relationships, our identity bleeds and blends in to the people we know.

As Argentine author, Jorge Luis Borges once wrote:

“I am not sure that I exist, actually. I am all the writers that I have read, all the people that I have met, all the women that I have loved; all the cities I have visited.”

Industrialisation, the move to cities, and all other aspects of modernity brought with it and even necessitated the nuclear family.

Today, if we are lucky, we are raise in a family with two parents and one or two siblings. Some don't even have that.

Even our extended family of relations are becoming distanced, the web of relationships, of knowing and being known reduces further.

I believe there is still much goodness in the nuclear family structure, but it is a far cry from the tribal abundance we came from and evolved for.

I believe that we will soon begin returning to tribal structures in society as humanity's consciousness evolves and we reconsider our goals and values.

Localisation, getting back to nature, knowing people more intimately, greater leisure time, freedom to specialise in something meaningful.

All of that and more is what awaits humanity when we decide to embrace 'a new and ancient story' in the words of author Charles Eisenstein.

I believe a return to tribal living - but at a higher level of integration and technology - is not a question of "if", but "when" and "how soon".
