What do Belize and Dubai have in common?

This might surprise you…

But both places give children a lot more freedom than what I’m used to seeing in the U.S.

In Belize, I’ve seen kids walking around alone, exploring on their own.
Same thing in Dubai.

As an American, it honestly makes me pause.

We’re not used to that level of independence for children.

But it got me thinking…

In the U.S., most kids don’t experience freedom until college.
And when they do?
A lot of us make mistakes—sometimes big ones.

Why?

Because freedom, when it hits all at once, can feel overwhelming.

But in places like Belize or Dubai,
freedom is introduced early, gradually, and with experience.

Kids learn responsibility by living it—not just hearing about it.

Now, I’m not saying I’m ready to let my own kids run free without limits.

But what I am saying is:

The way we introduce freedom shapes how we handle it later in life.

When kids learn how to make choices earlier,
they tend to make better choices when it really counts.

Something to think about—especially as we raise the next generation in a global world.
