Wanda Jackson live: Hard Headed Woman (1958) and Let’s Have a Party (2012)

Wanda Jackson: the “Queen of Rockabilly” covers Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Wanda and Elvis were both beginning to make their mark in the mid-1950’s. But it was not an easy road. People were repulsed by Presley’s stage gyrations and “vulgar” music. Pushback was even stronger towards Jackson – a “girl” striving to Rock ‘n’ Roll music as well. This five+ minute video shows Jackson performing two songs - Hard Headed Woman (in 1958) and her top 40 hit Let’s Have a Party (in 2012)– fifty+ years apart! Presley performed Hard Headed Woman in the 1958 film King Creole and Party in the 1957 film Loving You. Jackson shines in both performances – more than fifty years apart!

Rock ‘n’ Rollers helped open the door to wider market exposure for talented African-American songwriters. As noted in the video, both these songs were written by and credited to African-American songwriters. Songwriters received royalties whenever their songs were played on AM radio (something not granted the performer). Yes, back then it only a penny or so per unit – but altogether, multi millions of pennies!

Joe Maphis, the “King of Strings,” makes a brief appearance during the Hard Headed Woman segment. He’s playing a famous double-neck guitar custom built by a fledgling Mosrite Guitar company. Mosrite became well known when the Ventures began exclusively playing their guitars in the 1960’s.
