Virology Lectures 2021 #8 - Viral DNA Replication

The smallest viruses with DNA genomes encode just one protein that allows replication by the cell’s DNA synthesis machinery. In contrast, some large DNA viruses encode complete DNA replication systems. In this lecture we reveal the mechanisms of DNA replication, including how origin-binding proteins recruit the host synthetic apparatus, replication by strand displacement or a replication fork, solving the 5'-end problem caused by RNA priming, and how viral genomes ensure that cells are actively duplicating their DNA to provide access to the DNA synthesis machinery.
