The Pilot Who Refused to Jump: His First Mission Became a Legend

On his very first combat mission over Germany in 1943, John "Red" Morgan found himself in a nightmare. A German fighter's shell smashed into the cockpit of his B-17, shattering the windshield and leaving his co-pilot with a horrific head wound. The co-pilot, dazed and crazed by the injury, began fighting Morgan for the controls, trying to crash the plane. As the aircraft caught fire and half the crew bailed out in the chaos, Morgan realized if he jumped, the wounded men left behind would die. For two hours, he flew the massive bomber with one hand while physically fighting off his frantic co-pilot with the other—all while under constant enemy attack.
