Upp! - Atari 2600 Homebrew - Play Through and Commentary
Upp! is a homebrew video game for the Atari 2600. It's a fun game with quite a few elements to consider while playing. In this video, I'll give it a test drive where I go from bad to mediocre!
I found this game earlier this afternoon when it was announced on Facebook. I downloaded it from the following link:
http://theloon.itch.io/upp
The game is available to download at no cost, but I encourage you to throw the developer a few bucks if you like it. These guys fire up their assembly programs and plug away at some pretty tough code when they could be enjoying the benefits of game development on today's modern game development frameworks. These guys are hard core and deserve some love from the community they serve.
I was far too distracted by the game to adequately describe how to play, so here are the official instructions:
Escape the space barrier by thrusting upwards! Avoid the plasma ball and laser blasts from enemy UFOs. Obtain the energy pods (the round objects with an exclamation mark) to blast openings. If a plasma ball strikes an energy pod then the space wall rebuilds. Points are awarded when the plasma ball hits the space wall or the player exits far north.
Set either difficulty switch to PRO for a slightly more challenging game.
Press FIRE to start game or thrust upwards.
Steer left or right with the joystick.
